Guided by the co-operative philosophy that great things happen when ordinary people work together, my working life has focused on helping working people build the organizational and financial resources they need to be successful.
A member of Vancity for 40 years, I bring leadership and experience in financial management, governance, and labor relations to my role as Director and past Chair of the Vancity Board.
My commitment to social justice, women’s rights, the trade union movement and environmental issues inspired me to seek election to the Vancity Board. I’m proud to be part of the decision that Vancity embrace reconciliation with indigenous people as a core value.
A labour relations specialist with a strong record of leadership and financial management in the non-profit sector, I built on my experience in advocacy, negotiations, mediation and human resources by obtaining my MBA from SFU in 2001. In 2015, I retired from my job with the BC Government and Service Employees’ Union, where I represented the union and workers at arbitration and Labour Board hearings.
My career includes working as a reporter, president of the union local representing newspaper workers, a vice-chair of the BC Labour Relations Board, and provincial director of the BC NDP. Other leadership positions include serving as vice-president at the BC Federation of Labour and at the West Coast Legal Education Action Fund, an organization dedicated to affirming women’s equality.
Now in my ninth year on the Vancity Board of Directors, I am past Chair of the Board and currently chair of the Risk Committee. During my time on the Vancity Board, I also chaired the Governance and Conduct Review Committee and the Human Resources Committee.
An avid cyclist and hiker, I also enjoy birding. I volunteer most summers with BC Parks to act as a guardian on a remote bird sanctuary in the Strait of Georgia. My love of nature has enhanced my appreciation of the need for environmental action. I recently moved to Victoria where I have become very interested in the native plants of this special environment.
I am a 40 year member of Vancity and live in James Bay with my husband, Geoff Meggs. We have two adult daughters.
